Wolverine’s Top Game Sales Chart
Marvel’s Wolverine Ranks as September’s Top Gaming Hit, Driving PS5 Sales Surge
The action-packed world of gaming saw Marvel’s Wolverine take the crown, debuting as the best-selling game of September in the United States, according to analytics firm Circana. This achievement isn’t just a stellar performance for the title; it represents a significant milestone for the PlayStation 5 and the exclusive content ecosystem.
By utilizing full sales data for both physical and digital copies, the PlayStation 5 exclusive delivered the highest launch-month dollar sales for a Sony-published game since Helldivers II in early 2024. This puts Wolverine in a league of its own, successfully outperforming titles like Stellar Blade, Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, and remasters of popular franchises such as Horizon: Zero Dawn and Days Gone.
The success of Wolverine has had a tangible ripple effect across the console landscape. The game was instrumental in boosting PlayStation 5 revenue by a remarkable 43% compared to the same time last year. Furthermore, it contributed to Sony pushing hardware sales to their highest levels since May 2025, demonstrating the deep connection between high-quality exclusive titles and console hardware performance.
Globally, the game’s appeal extended far beyond North America. Wolverine was the second-best-selling PS5 game worldwide in September, narrowly behind only EA Sports FC 27. Despite the massive demand, the title was only available for half of the month, fueling anticipation for future releases.
The overall video game market showed a mixed picture during September. While the top ten best-selling games included several brand-new releases, including NBA 2K27, the broader market saw some shifts in console sales. Total hardware unit sales experienced a slight dip of 3% compared to a year prior. The PlayStation 5 continued its strong trajectory, increasing its unit sales by 22% year-on-year.
Conversely, other platforms faced tougher competition. Nintendo Switch unit sales fell by 14%, and Xbox Series sales experienced a steeper decline of 27%, bringing Xbox console unit sales to an all-time low. This shift highlights the continued dominance and resilience of the PlayStation platform in the current gaming market.
