Wonder Man and Power Rangers cancel another Disney+ show

The realm of live-action adaptations on Disney+ continues to face unexpected turbulence, as another long-anticipated project has been officially scrapped. The highly discussed adaptation of Gargoyles is no longer moving forward, leaving fans with a decidedly uncertain future for this iconic franchise.

The decision comes amidst a string of recent disappointments for the streaming giant. Disney+ has already faced setbacks, including the cancellation of Wonder Man Season 2 and the shelving of plans for a new Power Rangers series. This string of cancellations suggests a significant shift in how the platform is managing its vast library and future content pipeline.

The Fate of Gargoyles

The live-action opportunity for Gargoyles was developed under a license held by Atomic Monster. However, series creator Greg Weisman recently confirmed that the project has been abandoned. In an interview, Weisman addressed the situation directly, noting that while the live-action path is closed, he has no current plans for an animated continuation.

“Well, I know the live-action side of it is, uh, the Atomic Monster had the license to develop a live-action Gargoyles for Disney+, and that’s dead. I have no idea about animation, but there are no current plans for live-action,” Weisman stated. The comment underscores the abrupt end to a potential pathway for the beloved show.

Despite the cancellation, the legacy of Gargoyles remains strong. The original animated series, which aired from 1994 to 1997, managed to cultivate a devoted fanbase and became a cult favorite long before its live-action aspirations were considered. Created by Weisman alongside producers Frank Paur and designer Greg Guler, the series cemented its place in pop culture history.

While speculation lingers about the possibility of bringing the franchise back to the screen, no new animated series or live-action projects have been officially confirmed. For now, fans must wait to see if the legacy of the Gargoyles can find a new and exciting home.
