The momentum behind one of cinema’s most iconic franchises has hit a standstill. Filmmaker Danny Boyle has recently confirmed that development on the third installment of the “28 Years Later” series, starring Cillian Murphy, has been put on the back burner.

Despite the undeniable appeal of the concept, the project is currently stalled, awaiting the necessary financing to move forward. When asked about the status of the film, Boyle made it clear that while he remains hopeful about bringing the vision to life, the financial groundwork needs to be firmly established before production can officially begin.

Adding to the complexity are scheduling conflicts among Boyle’s talented collaborators. His longtime creative partner, writer and producer Alex Garland, has recently been deeply immersed in another massive undertaking: adapting the video game “Elden Ring” for A24. This high-stakes project has consumed much of his time, leaving less bandwidth for other major film commitments.

The timeline for the “28 Years Later” film remains ambitious, with a target release date set for March 2028. However, even with filming complete, the production schedule is complicated by Garland’s current post-production demands, which are expected to tie him up for nearly the entire following year.

This juggling act is not unique to Boyle. While the franchise faces financing hurdles, the filmmaker remains actively engaged in other ambitious creative ventures. He is currently occupied with a separate project set in Antarctica, penned by the acclaimed “Trainspotting” writer John Hodge. This solo trek film follows the groundbreaking 2018 expeditions led by American athlete Colin O’Brady and British explorer Louis Rudd.

Whether navigating the complexities of post-apocalyptic narratives or exploring the stark beauty of the South Pole, Boyle continues to demonstrate a restless drive for new, challenging stories. It is a reminder that even the most celebrated creative forces often operate in a complex landscape of budgets, timelines, and creative opportunities.
