Akiva Goldsman denies Star Trek spinoff will happen
The universe of Star Trek is a vast and beloved landscape, but even in the realm of science fiction, creative opportunities can prove elusive. This sentiment was recently voiced by Akiva Goldsman, the co-creator of the acclaimed series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, as he reflected on a potential future for the franchise.
Last year, Goldsman had pitched an ambitious spinoff series titled Star Trek: Year One. The concept involved diving into the initial year of Captain James T. Kirk’s five-year mission, a natural progression that many fans had eagerly anticipated following the success of his previous work.
However, the news that followed delivered a sobering reality check. Goldsman shared that the spinoff would not be happening. “Nobody’s called, the sets are gone,” he noted, acknowledging the practical hurdles facing large-scale production. He explained that while the idea was compelling, there was a more immediate and efficient path forward.
“It’s never been officially yes, and it’s never been officially no,” Goldsman admitted. He argued that pursuing the spinoff would have been creatively and economically less expedient, especially considering the assets already established within the franchise. He suggested that continuing the core narrative was the smarter creative choice.
The creative landscape for the franchise is shifting, and Goldsman also expressed that his personal chapter with Star Trek may be drawing to a close. “I would have loved to have done Year One and kept on with this group because they’re my cohort now,” he said. He felt that the time for that specific venture had passed, reflecting on the journey from childhood fascination to adult participation in the franchise.
The focus is now firmly on the conclusion of the current era. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set to wrap up with its final season, which will feature a concise six-episode run. This upcoming finale will premiere on September 24, offering fans a definitive conclusion to Kirk’s initial command.
While the possibility of a direct sequel may have faded, Goldsman remains optimistic about the franchise’s future. Despite the current pause, he conveyed confidence that Star Trek will continue to find its way forward, regardless of the specific television projects that unfold next.
