Shrek fans get a new way to experience the movie ahead of sequel
Get ready to step right into the fairy tale. Fans of the beloved franchise Shrek are about to experience the original film in an entirely new dimension, setting the stage for the sequel with an immersive reality event.
A major collaboration is underway, as Cosm, a shared-reality company founded in 2020, is partnering with Universal Studios, DreamWorks Animation, and the visual effects studio Reel FX to bring the magic to life. The project will premiere a reimagined version of Shrek Part 1 within a shared reality space.
This groundbreaking experience will be showcased on Cosm’s LED dome screen, allowing audiences to literally step into iconic locations like Shrek’s Swamp, Duloc’s Arena, the Kingdom of Far Far Away, and Dragon’s Keep. Viewers will have the opportunity to experience the adventure alongside beloved characters, including Shrek, Donkey, Princess Fiona, and many others.
Marking a significant milestone, this premiere will also serve as the first animated movie to debut in the shared reality format at Cosm. It will maintain the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio, ensuring an expansive and captivating cinematic experience.
Alexis Scalice, VP and Head of Cosm Studios at Cosm, expressed excitement about the project. “Our first animated film, Shrek in Shared Reality, allows us to amplify the humor and irreverent charm that makes its story and characters beloved across generations. We are so proud to bring Shrek to life in this incredible way, for audiences to experience twenty-five years after its initial debut, and this newfound partnership continues to reinforce our confidence in what is truly possible for immersive entertainment.”
The excitement doesn’t stop there. This immersive viewing event comes just ahead of anticipation for the next chapter in the saga. Details surrounding Shrek 5 are already surfacing, with the sequel set for release in theaters on June 30, 2027. The next adventure will follow Shrek and Donkey as they embark on a whirlwind big-city quest, introducing Shrek and Fiona’s three new children.
The upcoming film Shrek 5 is helmed by director Conrad Vernon, Walt Dohrn, and Brad Ableson, with the screenplay penned by Michael McCullers. The ensemble cast includes familiar faces like Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Zendaya, and Marcello Hernández, promising another dose of fairy tale fun for the cinematic world.
