Alpha Gang world premieres at TIFF

The anticipation is building for the return of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), promising another vibrant celebration of global cinema. Set to run from September 10–20, this year’s edition aims to build on the monumental success of the previous 50th festival, which drew nearly 700,000 attendees. The festivities officially kick off with opening night scheduled for Thursday, September 10, at the historic Roy Thomson Hall.

TIFF is poised to deliver a dynamic array of content spanning acclaimed directors, Hollywood heavyweights, and compelling international talent. Beyond the red carpet premieres and the celebrated TIFF: The Market, the festival promises unforgettable audience experiences across all eleven days.

The programming this year reflects the organization’s mission to curate films that speak to the current moment and spark rich dialogue. As Anita Lee, Chief Programming Officer at TIFF, noted, the selection of Special Presentations showcases the authenticity, the unexpected, and the ambition of cinema now. She added that these titles are sure to be among the festival’s most talked-about entries, captivating audiences long after the credits roll.

Among the lineup of anticipated features are several high-profile world premieres, signaling major cinematic moments. One notable inclusion is Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, directed by Bassam Tariq and starring Mahershala Ali. The film follows Latif, a devoutly religious hitman who navigates the challenging balance between work, faith, and fatherhood when his wife dies, leading him on a desperate journey to protect his children.

The festival also features imaginative and genre-bending stories. Prepare for action with Alpha Gang, a wild ride starring Dave Bautista, Cate Blanchett, Riley Keough, Lily Rose-Depp, and Chris Pine. This film throws the audience into the world of alien invaders who disguise themselves as a 1950s biker gang on their quest to conquer Earth.

International cinema also gets a major spotlight with the premiere of Glaxo from Argentina. Set in a provincial factory town, the film delves into the complex relationships among four friends whose lives are irrevocably altered as an ex-cop and his seductive wife move to town, exploring themes of passion, vengeance, and innocence across transformative decades.

Further adding depth to the festival’s offerings is The Housewife, which stars Naomi Watts, Tye Sheridan, Michael Imperioli, and Luke Evans. Based on a gripping premise, this story follows a New York Times journalist who tracks down a potential Nazi officer living in Queens, leading to increasingly unsettling implications.

Adding another layer of dramatic romance is Love Your Life, a production boasting the talents of Ryan Gosling and featuring stars like Margaret Qualley, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Aaron Pierre, Gabriel Basso, and Catherine Keener.
