Amber Wilkinson leads La Bola Negra victory in Toronto
La Bola Negra, a sweeping Spanish drama, has stolen the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival, marking a significant moment for queer storytelling on the global stage.
Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the film masterfully weaves together the lives of three gay men across different eras: 1932, 1937, and 2017. This exploration of intertwined lives is deeply inspired by the unfinished literary world of Federico García Lorca, lending the narrative a rich, poetic resonance.
The film made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May, quickly generating buzz and critical acclaim. Recognizing its artistic merit, it was subsequently picked up by Netflix for distribution later this year.
Winning the People’s Choice award in Toronto is a major accolade, especially since La Bola Negra is the first non-English language film to secure the prize. This recognition is seen as a barometer for cinematic taste, often signaling future success at major ceremonies like the Oscars, much like Nadine Labaki’s Where Do We Go Now? in 2011.
The directors were thrilled by the recognition, describing the award as “the greatest gift we could receive”.
The critical response to the film was equally strong, with other acclaimed dramas also earning high honors. Peter Farrelly’s biographical drama I Play Rocky received the runner-up prize, while Siân Heder’s powerful drama Being Heuman secured the second runner-up spot.
