The world of artificial intelligence is rarely as dramatic as the internal battles fought by the people steering it. Now, a new cinematic endeavor, Artificial by Luca Guadagnino, promises to pull back the curtain on one of the most volatile periods in the history of AI—the chaotic backstage drama of OpenAI in 2023.
Neon recently released the first teaser trailer for the film, immediately setting the stage for a high-stakes exploration of power, betrayal, and the intense maneuvering behind the scenes of a revolution.
At the heart of this intense narrative are some of the industry’s most recognizable faces, lending gravity to the story of Silicon Valley’s internal power struggles. Andrew Garfield steps into the role of Sam Altman, while Yura Borisov portrays Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder who spearheaded the movement that ultimately led to Altman’s departure.
The ensemble cast is equally compelling. Monica Barbaro plays Mira Murati, the chief technology officer, and Cooper Hoffman brings gravitas to Greg Brockman, the board chairman. Adding further layers to the conflict is Ike Barinholtz, who steps into the shoes of Elon Musk.
The screenplay was penned by Simon Rich, who also contributed to the production alongside David Heyman, Jeffrey Clifford, and the Guadagnino family, ensuring the script captures the complex, intricate relationships governing this era.
Beyond the actors, the film navigates a fascinating real-world development: its journey to the screen. Initially, Artificial was set to be distributed by Amazon MGM Studios. However, just days after Amazon announced its ambitious plans to invest $50 billion in OpenAI, the film was abruptly dropped.
Fortunately, Neon stepped in to champion the project, securing its distribution and ensuring this high-stakes drama finds its audience. This shift in ownership added another layer of intrigue, reflecting the very unpredictability that defines the world of technology.
The cast members reflected on this unexpected turn. Andrew Garfield noted that while he was surprised by the distribution changes, he felt the process had to find its right home. Cooper Hoffman agreed, finding the subsequent acquisition by Neon a welcome development.
Artificial is scheduled to premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 5, followed by a screening at the BFI London Film Festival on October 11. For a wider audience, Neon has slated the film for a theatrical release on December 25.
