Buddy Movie Gets Surprise Video Game Spin-off Trailer
Cristin Milioti’s beloved film Buddy is getting an unexpected and deliciously twisted spin-off: a video game. ModRetro has announced Buddy: The Video Game, bringing the colorful, chaotic world of the film to interactive play. The initial teaser trailer has already dropped, hinting at some seriously dark fun.
The game is set to debut later this year, bringing Buddy’s vibrant world to the ModRetro Chromatic, and it will also boast full compatibility with the Game Boy Color.
The 50-second teaser trailer immediately establishes a striking visual aesthetic, steeped in the bright, nostalgic look of a 1990s children’s show. However, the tone quickly pivots, injecting a dose of genuine unease. The orange unicorn mascot delivers a chilling line to a frightened child: “It’s your chance to be brave. You got to be scared to be brave.”
The footage then shifts dynamically, cutting between vibrant pixel art visuals, intense dialogue scenes, top-down exploration sequences, and genuinely arcade-style horror gameplay, setting a tone that promises far more than just a cute adventure.
Buddy: The Video Game is packed with variety, offering four distinct modes for players to explore.
Story Mode: This mode follows the narrative of the film, allowing players to make crucial choices about whether they choose to appease Buddy or actively defy him.
Survival Mode: For those who prefer high-stakes action, this mode puts players in charge of running, hiding, and desperately searching for resources while Buddy relentlessly hunts them down.
Buddy Mode: This is perhaps the most whimsical yet terrifying mode, where players take control of the orange unicorn, turning the tables and hunting the children themselves.
Mini Game Mode: Bringing the fun back, this mode features activities directly inspired by the fictional show, including dancing, painting, dusting, and riding.
Developed by playinstinct and published by ModRetro, the game is slated for a launch in the fourth quarter of 2026. It will launch as a physical cartridge for the ModRetro Chromatic.
The original film Buddy stars Cristin Milioti, Patton Oswalt, Michael Shannon, Topher Grace, and Keegan-Michael Key, with direction by Casper Kelly and co-writing by Jamie King. The movie opens in theaters on August 28th. The video game promises to be an equally unforgettable experience, expanding on the unforgettable, unsettling world created by the cast and crew.
