Cannes Winner sets February release

Among the most unforgettable cinematic experiences this year is Sandra Wollner’s film Everytime, a profound drama about the inescapable nature of loss. This film manages to navigate complex emotional territory while skillfully sidestepping conventional narrative structures, making it a truly staggering watch.

The visual poetry of Everytime is equally striking, thanks to the impeccable direction of Aftersun director Gregory Oke. Oke, who has garnered acclaim for his work including the Un Certain Regard prize and multiple Gotham Award nominations, brings a unique sensibility to Wollner’s story, crafting an atmosphere that is both tender and devastating.

The narrative centers on a trio: Ella (Birgit Minichmayr), her younger daughter Melli (Lotte Shirin Keiling), and their teenage family friend Lux (Tristan Lopez). The story begins on the eve of a family vacation, an idyllic moment that is brutally shattered by a shocking tragedy. One year later, the three characters reunite, adrift in a state of suspended grief, and embark on a journey to Tenerife, attempting to recreate a family holiday that was never realized.

As they explore the strange new sun of the island, the film masterfully blurs the lines between the past, present, and future. It is a journey where memory and present pain collide, forcing the characters to confront the enduring weight of what has been lost.

Critics have noted the film’s powerful thematic depth. Reviewers have observed that Everytime explores the terrible loss of a teenage girl’s life, leaving her mother, younger sister, and boyfriend bound in mutual devastation. While the film shares some stylistic echoes with the minimalism of the Berlin School of cinema, it offers a distinct, intensely personal exploration of grief that resonates deeply with the audience.

The film is set in present-day East Berlin during the balmy months of the year, establishing a melancholic backdrop against which the personal drama unfolds.

In addition to its emotional impact, the film is poised for wider attention. It will be released on February 12th, and in advance of its roll-out, a special teaser has already debuted, offering a glimpse into the poignant world of Everytime.
