The much-anticipated $100 million-budget reboot of Cliffhanger is finally setting its sights on the big screen, slated for a wide theatrical release in the United States on February 24th, 2027.

This release marks a significant milestone for a project that navigated a turbulent path. It emerged from a period where the original distributor, Row K, faced serious financial difficulties, putting several of their major films in limbo. The new endeavor, therefore, was brought into the fold through a unique blend of international pre-sales and private investment, demonstrating a strong faith in its potential.

The film was ultimately acquired by NEON, which committed $12 million to the project, alongside a substantial $20 million P&A commitment, underscoring their confidence in the material’s breakout potential.

The creative landscape behind the project underwent a dramatic shift before production could officially begin. Initial plans featuring Sylvester Stallone and director Ric Roman Waugh were ultimately shelved following reported creative differences.

To inject fresh energy into the franchise, the project was thoroughly reimagined. New creative forces stepped in, including Jaume Collett-Sera, known for films like The Shallows and Carry-On, who brought a distinct vision to the script. The casting also shifted dramatically, with Lily James and Pierce Brosnan taking on the lead roles.

The resulting narrative takes a stark and compelling turn. It follows Naomi and her sister Sydney as they embark on a weekend excursion in the stunning Dolomites, staying with her father, Ray Cooper, an experienced mountaineer who manages a luxurious chalet.

Their idyllic escape is violently interrupted when the group is ambushed by kidnappers. Faced with immediate danger, Naomi must summon her courage to protect her family and ensure the safety of her father before the situation spirals out of control.

The confidence surrounding the new iteration is palpable. Reports suggest the film has tested very well, fueling the distributor’s belief that this reimagining is poised to be a major cinematic success.
