D&D sequel adventure seeks new world
Despite a mixed box-office return, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” has already cemented itself as a beloved entry in the franchise, drawing an enthusiastic and dedicated fan following.
While the film made a modest showing at the box office, the critical praise and the sheer joy it delivered to audiences have spoken louder than the financial figures. The success of the film lies not just in its adventure, but in the humor, tone, and the stellar performances delivered by stars like Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page, and Sophia Lillis.
Now, as the creative team looks toward the future, the focus shifts to the inevitable—the sequel. Despite the initial financial hurdles, the producers remain determined to find the perfect partner to bring the next chapter of this epic fantasy to life.
Daley and Goldstein have already crafted a screenplay for the proposed sequel, showcasing their belief in the continuing potential of the world they created. They are essentially holding the blueprint for what comes next, hoping a studio will recognize the immense value of continuing the franchise.
When asked about the economics of a follow-up, the producers emphasized that the desire to continue the story is deeply rooted in their passion for the characters and the unique storytelling approach of the first film. They noted that the initial act of Honor Among Thieves was crafted to launch directly into the action, avoiding lengthy exposition, which they felt was a refreshing and engaging experience.
“We fell in love with the characters, and there’s so much potential in a sequel,” Daley explained. “We are proud of the script, and we truly hope that at some point it finds a path forward.”
The journey of the franchise has certainly had its bumps, partly due to timing and external shifts in the gaming landscape. The financial challenges surrounding the first film were arguably compounded by external events, including changes in licensing that caused some fans to pause their support for the franchise.
Ultimately, the current endeavor is about finding the right synergy—a studio willing to recognize that the magic, humor, and narrative depth of the Dungeons & Dragons universe deserves to continue its grand adventure.
