Diego Fuentes is currently basking in the glow of attending Fantasia, where his film, Matapanki, continues to captivate audiences. While the festival showcases a variety of big-name films, it is Fuentes’ bold little black and white punk hero’s journey that has managed to win over hearts and minds.
The narrative of Matapanki dives into a delightfully bizarre premise: the story follows a teenager who stumbles upon a very special brew and subsequently develops astonishing powers fueled by alcohol.
Fuentes often reflects on where such fantastical concepts originate. When asked if this unique storyline emerged from personal experience, he suggests that many of us have experienced similar moments. He points to the shared human tendency: after a few drinks, it feels as though one can fight pretty much anybody.
The genesis of the film itself was equally lighthearted. Fuentes recounts how the creative process began not with grand cinematic visions, but with simple jokes. He explains that the initial spark came from hanging out with the camera operator and joking about making something similar to a movie by a Japanese director.
