Fruit Gathering and Guests take top prizes in Karlovy Vary
The Karlovy Vary Film Festival has once again celebrated cinematic brilliance, culminating in a ceremony that highlighted stories of resilience, complex relationships, and powerful female narratives.
The festival crowned Fruit Gathering as the grand winner, taking home the coveted Crystal Globe Grand Prix. This remarkable achievement recognizes a film that navigates the intense emotional landscape faced by two women in Myanmar as they strive to pursue their dreams against a backdrop of oppression.
The production is an international collaboration, stemming from a co-production between Myanmar, the Czech Republic, and France, demonstrating how cinematic storytelling can bridge cultural divides while tackling deeply personal struggles.
Beyond the grand prize, the festival recognized several standout works. The Danish film The Guest earned prestigious awards, including the Best Director and Special Jury Prize. The director, Mads Mengel, celebrated the recognition, noting his gratitude for the positive reception of the film.
Critics were particularly impressed by The Guest for its magnetic performances, profound emotional charge, and Mengel’s assured handling of a complicated domestic drama.
Further recognition went to the cast as well. Swiss actress Anna Schniz was honored with the Best Actress award for her captivating portrayal in A Happy Family, directed by Jan-Eric Mack.
