The world of DC entertainment is getting delightfully weird, as production ramps up in Atlanta for DC Studios’ new live-action spin-off series, The People vs. Gorilla Grodd.
Far from being a straightforward true crime procedural, this eight-part docuseries is already proving to be a uniquely bizarre blend of true crime and musical comedy. Filming is taking an unexpectedly whimsical turn, with set photos and videos emerging that hint at a truly unique approach to the narrative.
Speculation is running rampant about the creative choices, with glimpses of the cast already appearing in full costume. One memorable photo shows the character of Gorilla Grodd dressed in old-school formal wear, complete with a graduation gown, suggesting that the series might be weaving in cinematic montages or opening credits that are as theatrical as they are peculiar.
The production is already embracing the absurdity. Set videos and photographs have surfaced depicting the super-intelligent ape Gorilla Grodd attempting to serenade a woman with a Backstreet Boys cover. Backup singers are reportedly soon being enlisted to join the musical madness, promising a truly unforgettable soundtrack for the series.
The core of the story, however, remains grounded in serious investigation. At the heart of the series is the investigation of Jimmy Olsen, the Daily Planet reporter, who reopens the case to determine whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis’ most famous murder trials.
The ensemble cast bringing this story to life is stacked with familiar and fresh faces. Skyler Gisondo is set to reprise his role as Jimmy Olsen, while Jimmy Tatro steps into the role of Gorilla Grodd—a superintelligent ape convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. Other confirmed returnees include Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White, alongside notable additions like Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Dan Perrault, Arian Moayed, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz.
The creative direction behind the project is anchored by the acclaimed co-creators and writers, Perrault and Tony Yacenda, who will serve as showrunners and writers. Director Yacenda is tasked with guiding the entire run, while James Gunn and Peter Safran will provide executive production oversight, setting the stage at Warner Bros. Television.
This unique combination of high-stakes true crime and musical absurdity promises a fresh, engaging cinematic experience that is already setting a unique tone for the DC Universe.
