Fans of classic sci-fi and deep-dive mysteries are about to get a serious dose of thrills. Disney and Hulu have officially released a trailer for the never-before-seen R-rated director’s cut of the 2008 film, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, set to premiere on Hulu on August 14th.

This new version is the result of a long-held artistic vision. Director Carter had previously teased this darker approach on David Duchovny’s podcast Fail Better, explaining that during production he felt the material was too intense and had to dial back the content for a PG-13 rating.

Now, nearly two decades later, the filmmaker has finally had the opportunity to revisit his initial concept. The resulting cinematic experience, titled The X-Files: I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn, promises to faithfully restore the original vision, offering a significantly darker and more frightening thriller centered around a real-life Dr. Frankenstein.

The narrative follows the familiar pairing of Mulder and Scully as they navigate profound personal crises alongside their professional duties. Mulder finds himself isolated from the FBI, while Scully has dedicated herself to healing at a Catholic hospital, forging a deep bond with a critically ill child patient.

When an FBI agent vanishes into mystery and a defrocked priest begins experiencing unsettling psychic visions of the missing agent, Scully is called upon to bring Mulder back to the bureau. Her involvement is driven by his unique connection to the world of psychics, pushing them into uncharted territory.

Forced to confront the ghosts of their past, the partners must navigate a chilling winter landscape and grapple with an even more terrifying human monstrosity. The core truth of these unfolding crimes is waiting to be discovered, and it will require Mulder and Scully to chase it down.

The film features an impressive ensemble cast, including established stars such as David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Amanda Peet, Billy Connolly, Alvin ‘Xzibit’ Joiner, Callum Keith Rennie, and Mitch Pileggi.

The director’s cut is set to deliver a much more visceral exploration of the themes inherent in the original story, promising an experience for viewers looking for a truly frightening cinematic journey.
