The story of how a newspaper and a media empire reshaped the world is often wrapped in scandal and ambition. Now, filmmaker Danny Boyle is bringing that high-stakes history to the screen with his new project, Ink.
The highly anticipated film, which is set in the seismic year of 1969, stars a brilliant ensemble cast including Jack O’Connell, Guy Pearce, and Claire Foy. It is based on the acclaimed stage play Dear England by James Graham, a work that fuels the narrative of how history was written not just on the page, but through the brutal pursuit of influence.
At the heart of the story is the collision between media titans. It charts the ambitious journey of Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch, portrayed by Guy Pearce, and tabloid editor Larry Lamb, played by Jack O’Connell, as they launch The Sun newspaper. Murdoch’s goal is clear: to establish his publication as the definitive news source, and he hires Lamb to run the paper, setting the stage for an inevitable clash.
This strategic acquisition ignites a simmering rivalry between The Sun and its competitor, The Mirror. This conflict serves as a powerful lens through which the film examines the rise of modern British tabloids, tracing the lineage that led to everything from Murdoch-owned Fox News to the age of clickbait and the dominance of social media platforms.
Boyle steps into the director’s chair and produces this ambitious vision alongside a talented crew including Tessa Ross, Tracey Seaward, and Michael Ellenberg. The production is set to hit UK cinemas in January.
Beyond the cinematic release, Ink is slated for a global rollout, premiering in the UK, much of Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, before heading to Netflix for a US and international release. The film will also make a grand entrance at the Venice Film Festival as its opening feature tonight, promising an event steeped in journalistic drama and historical tension.
