Kung Fu Soccer’s $200M box office journey to the US
Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Soccer Adventure
When Stephen Chow first captivated audiences in America with his sports-infused hit Shaolin Soccer, it set a high bar for cinematic crossover appeal. Now, as the World Cup momentum fades, Chow has delivered a fresh spin on the action formula with his latest directorial effort, Kung Fu Soccer, which is currently dominating the Chinese box office.
This newest film is not just a sequel; it’s a reinvention of an iconic premise. The movie reimagines the story around an underdog, an all-female squad that integrates martial arts into their game to pursue an improbable victory at the prestigious Supreme Invincible Cup tournament.
Chow took the reins as writer and director for this adventure, even stepping back from the screen after his previous roles. This time, however, he is fully invested in the storytelling, bringing his signature blend of comedy and action to the soccer arena. The film also arrived coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Shaolin Soccer, perfectly timing its global release.
The reception from the Chinese market was explosive. Kung Fu Soccer set the box office ablaze, earning $214.3 million (RMB 1.46 billion) in just nine days. It successfully topped its initial performance with $73.7 million (RMB 501.1 million) in a two-day frame, proving that global sports narratives resonate powerfully across borders.
The cast is packed with international talent, ensuring a truly global feel for the tournament. Zhang Xiaofei stars as the team’s captain, supported by Dilraba Dilmurat as the star striker. The squad also features Lay Zhang as their expert kung fu coach, alongside exciting guest appearances from Hong Kong icon Carina Lau, Japanese star Takeru Satoh, and U.S. comedian Jimmy O. Yang.
While the excitement is high in Asia, fans in North America are eagerly anticipating a wider release. Although a specific date has yet to be announced, plans are underway for an American debut later this year. Distributors like Singapore’s Encore Films currently hold the international rights and are working diligently to secure deals across various territories.
With such massive success on the Chinese screen, Kung Fu Soccer is set to bring Chow’s unique vision and kinetic energy to a new audience, reminding everyone that the greatest games are played with skill, spirit, and a little bit of martial arts flair.
