Leith, Larraín, Naishtat join San Sebastian Competition
The vibrant world of international cinema is buzzing with news from the San Sebastian Film Festival, which has unveiled a thrilling slate of films vying for a spot in the Official Competition at its 74th edition, running from September 18 to 26.
This year’s lineup is particularly captivating, featuring talent from some of cinema’s most celebrated auteurs. Films by Mike Leigh, Nicole Garcia, and Pablo Larraín are officially competing against the best in the global field, promising a potent mix of narrative depth and artistic vision.
The festival also marks a transition in its leadership, with changes taking place as the event heads toward its final edition under long-time organizer José Luis Rebordinos. He will be succeeded by Maialen Beloki, who has served as one of the festival’s deputy directors since 2016.
Beyond the acclaimed international names, the competition boasts a diverse range of talent. Films from Benjamín Naishtat, Hans Petter Moland, and Yeşim Ustaoğlu will also be vying for the coveted Golden Shell, alongside a debut feature from Maha Harada.
Adding further flavor to the competition are several strong Spanish cinematic voices. These entries join three other Spanish films in contention: Mikel Gurrea’s Saints, Javier Ruiz Caldera’s 5 More Minutes, and Roberto Bueso’s El Mal Padre, which translates as The Bad Father.
It is a testament to the festival’s enduring appeal that filmmakers like Mike Leigh, who previously competed with Hard Truths in 2024, are once again making their mark on the international stage.
