Locarno reveals full lineup by Amber Wilkinson

The world of cinema is gearing up for another spectacular viewing experience as the Locarno Film Festival unveils its lineup for its 79th edition, promising an array of adventurous and surprising cinematic gems.

Running from August 5 to 15, the festival is set to dazzle audiences with a curated selection that has already garnered significant buzz. Artistic Director Giona A Nazzaro described the collection as “an adventurous selection, full of surprises,” setting a high bar for the cinematic conversations to come.

Among the highlighted features is the return of celebrated South Korean director Hong Sangsoo, who will present Nowhere to Lay My Eyes. This inclusion speaks to his unique ability to explore profound and evocative themes within the framework of narrative film.

The festival also shines a light on emerging talent and established voices. Singaporean filmmaker Nelson Yeo, known for his earlier recognition in the Filmmakers of the Present section with Dreaming & Dying, will feature his work, The House On The Moon, at Locarno.

Adding further international flavor, Canadian director Denis Côté is also featured in the main competition with his powerful film, Nobody’s Violence, promising a compelling and intense viewing experience.

The selection showcases a diverse range of perspectives, weaving together stories from various global cinematic landscapes. For instance, there is a strong thread of interest in the Filmmakers of the Present section this year, with Beatrice Gibson bringing her British/French co-production At Night, a haunting exploration that follows six women after dark in Paris.

Beyond the competition slots, audiences can also look forward to films outside the main selection, including the contemplative work of Albert Serra, with his feature Sixteen Moments Of My Life.

With these compelling titles on the horizon, and noted star names set to grace the Piazza Grande, Locarno reaffirms its position as a vibrant hub where cinematic innovation meets unforgettable storytelling.
