Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel have announced that their live-action adaptation of the classic Masters of the Universe is heading straight to SVOD, making it available to stream for Amazon Prime Video subscribers starting this Wednesday, July 22nd.

This move signals a significant shift in how blockbuster adaptations are being distributed. Instead of following the traditional route of hitting Pay-Per-View-On-Demand first, the film is bypassing the theatrical window entirely and jumping directly to home viewing. This represents a jump from screen to subscription service of just 47 days, demonstrating a new strategy for building engagement with established intellectual property.

Despite generating positive buzz and strong reviews, the movie faced a different kind of reality at the box office. The feature unfortunately did not meet expectations in the theatrical arena, taking in only $113.3 million worldwide against a $170 million budget.

Yet, behind the financial figures lies a calculated distribution plan. Amazon MGM’s domestic distribution chief, Kevin Wilson, explained that the streaming release is central to their strategy. He noted that the theatrical run served to build awareness and engagement that would continue well beyond the initial cinematic window.

This approach emphasizes building a lasting connection with audiences by placing the content directly where subscribers already spend their time. For fans of classic fantasy, the story itself remains timeless: it follows ten-year-old Adam Glenn who crash-lands on Earth, separates from his ancestor’s Power Sword of Grayskull, and eventually dons the mantle of He-Man to battle Skeletor for his home planet, Eternia.

The film is packed with a stellar cast ready to bring the epic world to life. Stars include Idris Elba as Man at Arms, Camila Mendes as Teela, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Kristen Wiig as Roboto, and morena Baccarin as the Sorceress, alongside numerous other talented actors who populate the realm of Eternia.
