The magic behind modern streaming content is getting an upgrade, thanks to artificial intelligence. Netflix recently revealed that across their library of films and television shows, approximately 300 programs have incorporated generative AI into their production process so far this year.

This isn’t just a footnote; it represents a fundamental shift in how entertainment is created. In a shareholders’ letter accompanying their second-quarter earnings report, the streaming giant detailed that the technology is integrated “across every level” of a program’s lifecycle—from initial conception and pre-visualization through actual production and final release.

The integration spans the entire workflow, allowing AI tools to assist in everything from brainstorming creative concepts to refining visual effects. This deep involvement means that generative AI isn’t just a finishing touch; it is driving efficiency at the very core of story development.

The benefits for production houses are substantial. Netflix noted that leveraging these advanced tools allows them to deliver higher-quality output much more quickly and at a lower cost than traditional methods. In some instances, the use of GenAI technology meant that productions could include key shots and sequences that would otherwise have been omitted due to budgetary or time constraints.

Specific titles already showcase this technological blending. This includes major projects like the Indian sports thriller Glory and the Brazilian soccer miniseries Brasil 70: A Saga do Tri, alongside docuseries such as The American Experiment, which featured around 17 minutes of footage enhanced by AI.

This move positions Netflix not only as a dominant content provider but also as an innovator in leveraging artificial intelligence for creative storytelling. The company has previously spoken about using AI to enhance user discovery and fuel its advertising business, signaling a clear strategy to embed this technology deep within the entertainment ecosystem.

With second-quarter revenue reaching $12.56 billion, up 13.4% year over year, and a net income of $3.4 billion, Netflix continues to demonstrate that embracing cutting-edge technology is key to scaling both creative ambition and financial success in the competitive media landscape.
