A Game of Fear and Frustration: Why a Classic Halloween Title Faced a Ban in Australia and New Zealand

The world of video gaming often pushes boundaries, but sometimes those boundaries lead to unexpected roadblocks. A highly anticipated new game based on the classic “Halloween” film franchise recently faced an unusual fate, being banned in both Australia and New Zealand.

This digital tribute, built in Unreal Engine 5, attempts to capture the chilling atmosphere of John Carpenter’s 1978 original. The game itself offers diverse gameplay experiences, allowing players to engage in a single-player story mode, test their mettle against bots offline, or dive into online multiplayer arenas where stealth and strategy are paramount to survival.

However, the reason for the ban has nothing to do with jump scares or action sequences. Instead, the controversy stems from the game’s content regarding controlled substances.

IllFonic Publishing, the studio behind the title, issued a statement confirming that the Australian Classifications Board had denied a rating for “Halloween: The Game.” Crucially, this decision was not related to typical concerns about video game violence or gore. Rather, the denial was based on the game’s incorporation of controlled substances.

The official explanation noted a significant disappointment among fans and players, stating that because the content involved controlled substances, the company could not sell the physical or digital product in both Australia and New Zealand markets.

While the exact nature of this restriction remains undisclosed by the classification board, reports suggested that player characters within the game possessed the ability to light a joint and smoke weed to gain an advantage during gameplay. This unexpected feature clearly threw the regulatory process into a surprising light.

Despite the regional ban, the game is not disappearing entirely. It remains slated for release across major platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, set for September 8th. Digital pre-orders are currently available for those eager to experience the chilling atmosphere of Haddonfield in a new way.
