When Horror Meets History: Caitriona Balfe and Alfonso Cuarón Tackle the Cult of Ascension

The cinematic world just got a dose of psychological dread, thanks to an unexpected pairing between established talent. Caitriona Balfe, best known for her commanding presence as Claire in the celebrated drama Outlander, is joining forces with Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón on the upcoming Apple TV series Ascension.

This ambitious project plunges viewers into the unsettling depths of a one-hour psychological horror thriller. The narrative is drawn from Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days, setting up a dark and compelling premise that promises to be both visually striking and deeply disturbing.

At the heart of the story is Rose, portrayed by Balfe—a relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother grappling with personal truths. Rose possesses a sharp brilliance for uncovering what others hide, but her quest immediately throws her into an existential crisis as she attempts to resolve her own internal chaos.

Rose’s journey takes a terrifying turn when she begins investigating a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension. Initially seeking refuge within the teachings of this group, she soon discovers that the sanctuary hides something far more insidious and dangerous beneath its polished facade.

The production is anchored by Apple Studios and Anonymous Content, reflecting Cuarón’s ongoing partnership with the platform. Balfe not only stars in the series but also takes on the role of executive producer, lending her significant creative control over the narrative.

The intricate tapestry of the show is overseen by a collaborative directorial team. Natalie Erika James and Christian White, known for their work on acclaimed series like Apartment 7A and Relic, co-showrun the project with Cuarón and Carlos Cuarón.

James is steering the directorial vision for the series, bringing a distinctive cinematic flair to the unfolding horror.
