Snyder’s Return sparks DC’s SnyderVerse revival

Before the current DC Universe landscape was defined by James Gunn and Peter Safran, the reins of creative responsibility had largely rested with one name: Zack Snyder. His tenure, spanning from 2013 until 2021, marked an intense period for the cinematic universe, leaving behind a significant, if complex, legacy.

Snyder was deeply embedded in nearly every film of the former DC Extended Universe. He was the driving force behind iconic entries like Man of Steel (2013), the heavily debated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and some of the pivotal Justice League films from 2017. His involvement ensured a distinct, visually striking tone for many of these major cinematic events.

Yet, this creative journey took an abrupt turn. After working on numerous high-profile projects, Snyder ultimately stepped away from the production. This departure was heavily influenced by personal circumstances—specifically the tragic death of his daughter and the intense exhaustion stemming from conflicts with Warner Bros. over the direction of the films.

Despite leaving the studio, Snyder’s footprint remained firmly etched across the DC cinematic landscape. Beyond directing, he served in key roles as a producer or executive producer on other major titles, including Suicide Squad (2016), Aquaman (2018), and both of Patty Jenkins’ acclaimed Wonder Woman movies.

His era set the stage for a dramatic transition in the DC universe. The shift signaled a complete reboot, placing new co-CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran, in charge of defining the future direction of the brand. While Snyder’s work defined an era, the studio has since embraced fresh leadership to chart the path forward, moving into a new chapter for the DC storytelling.
