The world of political satire just got a whole lot wetter and a whole lot more flamboyant. The long-running animated series South Park has made its triumphant, if slightly absurd, return for Season 29, kicking off with a bold identity shift and a very pointed cameo from the political landscape.
Under the new banner, the show has been rebranded as South America, a deliberate nod to the recent political landscape and the ongoing public fascination with renaming geography. Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone introduced the change as a satirical jab at Donald Trump’s frequent efforts to rename landmarks, referencing changes like Lake Ontario to Lake America and the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
This theme of renaming played out right at the beginning of the new season. The opening sequence for the premiere episode, titled South American Biker Gangs, immediately set a tone of irreverent political comedy, complete with an updated theme song that declared, “I’m goin’ down to South America, have myself a time!”
But the true eye-catcher was the newest addition to the series: a cameo appearance by Donald Trump himself. In the opening sequence, the former president was shown engaging in a distinctly unscripted moment, using what appeared to be an American flag to wipe himself down, capping weeks of build-up and lending a uniquely surreal layer to the satire.
