Spaceship Earth gets Disney+ Visual Treatment
Cosmic Connections: EPCOT’s Spaceship Earth Gets a Sci-Fi Reboot for Disney+
A classic icon from the theme parks is about to embark on an interstellar journey. Disney+ has officially ordered a pilot for a new television series inspired by the immersive experience of EPCOT’s beloved Spaceship Earth ride, planning to reimagine the park’s iconic geodesic sphere as the launchpad for an original science-fiction adventure.
This ambitious project promises a sprawling time-spanning narrative. The pilot’s logline sets the stage for a quest where a small band of teenagers from Earth’s past and future must join forces to confront a threat as vast and mysterious as time itself, pushing the boundaries of sci-fi storytelling.
Guiding this imaginative voyage is creator Jason Fuchs, who serves as both showrunner and executive producer through his Five Ten Productions. Bringing depth and cinematic vision to the project is veteran director Lee Toland Krieger, whose impressive credits span popular series like You, Riverdale, and Shadow & Bone, who will also direct the pilot and hold an executive producer credit.
The conceptual framework leans into the ride’s deep history. Spaceship Earth first opened in 1982 and served as a fascinating educational guide, tracing humanity’s breakthroughs—from the alphabet to the internet—within the sphere. While the new series borrows the attraction’s fascination with temporal travel, it crafts a wholly original science-fiction narrative rather than adapting the historical voyage directly.
The potential for this concept extends far beyond a single series. Ordering the pilot signals a lucrative strategy employed by Disney to transform its park attractions into expansive onscreen franchises. This approach has already proven successful with beloved rides such as The Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, and Country Bear Jamboree.
This strategy allows for a seamless transition between immersive physical spaces and engaging media, creating worlds that fans can explore across multiple platforms. The Spaceship Earth reboot positions this historic piece not just as a museum exhibit, but as the gateway to an endless universe of adventure.
