Sundance reveals Legacy line-up by Amber Wilkinson

The Sundance Film Festival is preparing to throw a spectacular trip down memory lane for its 2027 edition with the launch of its highly anticipated Legacy programme.

This special section, formerly known as From the Collection, promises an immersive journey through the festival’s cinematic history. Running from January 21 to 31, the event will be hosted in the stunning new setting of Boulder, Colorado, offering audiences a chance to reconnect with beloved classics and discover cinematic gems they may have missed over the years.

The Legacy screenings are more than just old movies on a screen; they are curated events designed to spark new conversations. The programme will feature archival and restoration screenings of fiction and nonfiction, enhanced by the presence of directors and select cast members, inviting deep discussions about the history of filmmaking.

A highlight of the retrospective will be the presentation of brand-new restorations. Fans can anticipate seeing the 2002 Sundance Film Festival version of Better Luck Tomorrow (directed by Justin Lin) meticulously restored. Furthermore, a stunning digital 4K restoration of Dogtown and Z-Boys (Stacy Peralta) will bring the legendary story of the Z-Boys to life in breathtaking detail.

The Legacy lineup is packed with anniversary celebrations and timeless stories. Attendees will also catch a 35th anniversary screening of Fool’s Fire (Julie Taymor), a poignant look at the making of the film, and a celebration of Nitrate Kisses by Barbara Hammer.

For those who love stories about women and their journeys, the programme also includes a 25th anniversary screening of Real Women Have Curves (Patricia Cardoso), offering a powerful retrospective. Adding to the celebration of cinematic history is a 35th anniversary screening of Swoon, starring Tom Kalin.

This Legacy programme ensures that the rich, vibrant history of the Sundance Film Festival continues to inspire. It is an opportunity to celebrate the legends who shaped cinema and discover the enduring magic hidden within the archives, all set against the beautiful backdrop of Colorado.
