  • ‘Supergirl’ Falls Short of Marvel and DC’s Biggest Box Office Bombs

The domestic box office recently took a surprising turn, marking a clear division between family animated triumphs and sprawling superhero spectacles.

While some films continue to command attention, the recent weekend saw a stark contrast. Some animated features managed to hold onto their spots, while massive superhero releases stumbled under the weight of expectation.

On the positive side, Toy Story 5 managed to retain the box-office crown, proving its staying power in the competitive cinematic landscape. However, even this successful entry experienced a larger second-weekend drop than anticipated, signaling that audience enthusiasm can be fleeting, even for beloved franchises.

Meanwhile, the superhero genre faced significant headwinds. The highly anticipated blockbuster Supergirl, failed to meet critical and commercial benchmarks.

The disappointment was particularly evident when comparing its performance to other major cinematic events. Supergirl took the number two spot in the opening weekend but grossed less than half of what the DC Universe’s first installment, Superman, managed in its initial weekend release in 2025.

This performance placed Supergirl among a group of titles that fell short of expectations across the board, mirroring some of the most disappointing releases from the DC Extended Universe and Marvel Cinematic Universe franchises.
