Tallinn unveils Baltic Film Competition line-up

The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) is setting the stage for a dynamic exhibition of Baltic filmmaking, announcing a robust selection of titles for its Baltic Film Competition.

This year’s competition features 12 remarkable films, including three world premieres and one international premiere, signaling a significant step for regional cinema on the global stage.

Beyond the main competition, the festival unveiled an impressive array of premieres across its other categories. The Critics’ Picks Competition showcased ten world premieres, while the Rebels with a Cause section featured nine new works, demonstrating a wide spectrum of emerging talent.

Edvinas Pukšta, the curator of the Baltic Film Competition, highlighted the vitality of the region’s cinematic output. He pointed to the fact that this selection underscores the strength of Baltic co-productions and the increasing involvement of local film professionals in ambitious international projects.

The program itself is a vibrant tapestry of storytelling, offering viewers a truly diverse cinematic experience. Ranging from accessible, entertaining narratives to more challenging and complex works, the festival celebrates the inherent diversity of Baltic cinema.

Pukšta emphasized that defining Baltic cinema is a fluid exercise, and this particular selection perfectly reflects that complexity. The films showcase a wide range of thematic explorations and unique approaches to storytelling, providing audiences with very different, yet equally compelling, cinematic experiences.
