Warsaw GP: What Belongs To Others with Amber Wilkinson

In the competitive arena of international cinema, a powerful new voice has emerged, claiming the top prize at the 42nd Warsaw International Film Festival with its compelling drama, What Belongs To Others.

Directed by Grzegorz Dębowski, the film captivated the jury with its nuanced approach to human experience. It tells a story that immediately draws the audience in: the narrative follows a petty thief who discovers a dead man, not as a tragedy, but as an unexpected opportunity to construct an entirely new life.

This journey, blending themes of reinvention and complexity, showcased the film’s ability to handle profound subject matter with delicate and precise storytelling. The jury praised the work for its exceptional performances and its complex portrait of a flawed and deeply human character, noting that the narrative was devoid of judgment.

The success of What Belongs To Others was further highlighted by the critical acclaim it received. Beyond the Grand Prix, the festival recognized other standout works, including Cai Chengjie for the directing award for Suzhou Quartet, and Maria Dębska, who received a Special Jury Award for her outstanding performance in Through The Wall.

The achievement of Dębowski’s film is also notable for its unique backing. The project was supported by the mayor of Warsaw, securing PLN 120,000, or approximately £23,000, demonstrating a commitment to fostering cinematic talent within the city.

The film had its world premiere in Venice earlier this year, setting the stage for this triumphant recognition at the Warsaw festival.
