At 68, Campbell has faced a diagnosis of a cancer that, while considered “treatable,” is currently incurable. Rather than focusing on the limitations of the prognosis, he has offered a remarkably candid outlook on how he intends to approach his remaining time.
When asked about his future, Campbell offered a philosophy centered on acceptance and presence. “I’ve decided, pretty specifically, to live with it, not die from it,” he stated. This perspective frames life not as a race against an illness, but as an opportunity to engage with the present moment.
He described the experience of managing the disease using a vivid, relatable metaphor. “The cancer rabbit hole is enormous,” Campbell explained. He elaborated on the complexity of the situation, noting that dealing with cancer often feels like a constant cycle: “It’s a whack-a-mole life, literally. Cancer compromises s— inside your body. So then you go, ‘deal with that,’ so then you deal with that. And then you sort of wait for it to then compromise something else. Meanwhile, you’re trying to put out the whole fire.”
This reflection highlights a profound acceptance of the ongoing battle, acknowledging the reality of the fight while choosing to manage the experience with a determined, rather than fearful, attitude. It is a testament to navigating immense challenges with a unique, wry sense of humor.
Despite facing these circumstances, Campbell remains actively engaged in his creative life. He is currently promoting the dramedy film Ernie & Emma, which centers on a poignant road trip with his wife’s ashes. He is bringing the film to audiences on an 18-date tour of Alamo Drafthouse locations, kicking off tonight in Los Angeles.
