Disney reacts to ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Moana’ box office flops
Summer movie season usually promises a cinematic feast for the eyes and wallets, but this year, the big leagues at The Walt Disney Company found themselves serving up an unexpected menu. While the studio launched its marketing blitz with some truly massive tentpoles, the box office results suggested that not all Disney dreams translated into blockbuster success.
After the momentum started with 20th Century Studios’ The Devil Wears Prada 2, Disney positioned three major films as must-see events: The Mandalorian and Grogu, Toy Story 5, and the live-action retelling of Moana. These were presented as the essential cinematic experiences audiences needed.
While audiences certainly flocked to the screens for Toy Story 5, the other major attractions did not quite reach the heights of expectation. The expected magic in The Mandalorian and Grogu and Moana struggled to compete with a diverse lineup of unexpected champions.
The box office scoreboard revealed that these Disney spectacles were ultimately outgrossed by some very different, yet equally compelling, cinematic entries. Films like The Odyssey, the critically acclaimed Obsession, and the quirky independent hit Backrooms managed to pull ahead of the major studio releases.
It seems that this summer reminded everyone that sometimes, the most surprising hits aren’t found in the biggest studio budgets, but in the wild, unpredictable corners of cinema. The season proved that audiences have a taste for the unexpected, turning those breakout independent features into the unexpected winners.
