Before the curtain officially rises on Insidious: Out of the Further, franchise co-creator James Wan has opened up about one of the biggest regrets he harbors from the horror universe: the death of his beloved character, Elise Rainier.

This revelation comes just days before the film hits theaters on August 21, 2026, offering a fascinating look at the creative tensions that shape a beloved franchise. Wan, who co-produced the film alongside Jason Blum, Oren Peli, and Leigh Whannell, shared that Lin Shaye will once again reprise her iconic role as Elise Rainier in the upcoming installment.

“Lin is the beating heart of this franchise,” Wan explained, reflecting on her role. He admitted that the decision to kill Elise in the first film, Insidious, was born out of a need to end on a big, scary note, specifically for the opening film. He noted that both he and Leigh Whannell have carried that regret through every subsequent sequel, necessitating clever ways to keep the character alive.

The story of Elise Rainier itself is one of continuous evolution. Lin Shaye, the 82-year-old American actress, has played the role for sixteen years, navigating the character’s journey across five films. She reflects on how this long tenure has given her a unique perspective on the character.

“It’s so interesting for me how I can add something about her that you learn from the circumstances of each movie,” Shaye shared. “I don’t always know how I’m going to react to any particular demon; she’s always different, but Elise grows each time, even in her understanding of the demonic world.”

As Insidious: Out of the Further marks the sixth installment, Shaye gets to step back into the role, carrying the weight of the previous stories while embracing the character’s evolving journey. The film promises to explore the legacy of Elise, balancing the scares with the profound emotional depth that has defined the franchise for years.
