Following a season that captivated audiences and critics alike, the world of television is gearing up for an exciting evolution as Crave and HBO Max unveil significant additions to the cast of their ice hockey romance drama, Heated Rivalry. The show has already proven itself a cultural phenomenon, setting a high bar for emotional depth and compelling rivalry, and now, it is deepening the narrative with fresh, magnetic talent.

The series has welcomed two highly anticipated actors who are set to inhabit pivotal roles alongside the returning stars. Charlie Gillespie joins the cast as Troy Barrett, a hockey player traded to the Ottawa Centaurs, defined by his complicated persona as a “grumpy recovering bully.” Complementing him is Justice Smith, who steps into the role of Harris Drover, the team’s seemingly carefree extraverted social media manager.

These new additions will serve as secondary leads in the unfolding drama, providing rich ground for the central conflict and emotional exploration already established by Connor Storrie as Ilya Rozanov and Hudson Williams as Shane Hollander. Their dynamic promises to add a fresh layer of complexity and unexpected chemistry to the storied rivalry at the heart of the story.

The foundation of Heated Rivalry is built upon Rachel Reid’s acclaimed “Game Changers” novels, which expertly shifted focus between various characters. While the first season explored the intense dynamic between Shane and Ilya in the novel Heated Rivalry, it also cleverly incorporated elements of the relationship between hockey player Scott Hunter and barista Kip Grady.

As the series moves into its second season, the narrative is set to pivot towards a new focus, adapting the sixth book, The Long Game. This shift will place renewed emphasis on the evolving relationship between Shane and Ilya as they navigate building a life together. Meanwhile, the dynamic between Troy and Harris is expected to evolve into a compelling B plot, adding another layer of intrigue to their journey.

Showrunner Jacob Tierney and executive producer Brendan Brady have emphasized the deliberate choice behind these casting decisions. They noted that during the selection process, they sought actors who could bring profound depth and heart to the characters. Justice Smith and Charlie Gillespie immediately resonated with the vulnerability and resilience inherent in both Harris and Troy, providing an instinctive understanding of their core motivations.

The story is set to shift geographically as the action moves primarily to Ottawa, where Russian hockey player Ilya has relocated closer to his now-committed partner, Shane. This new setting provides a compelling backdrop for the central conflict: two individuals must learn how to build a shared future while carefully concealing their true feelings for one another in public.

With filming already underway and plans set for a Spring 2027 release, the production continues to build upon its initial success. The commitment to these layered character arcs ensures that Heated Rivalry is not just a sports drama, but a deeply engaging exploration of love, rivalry, and the complex journey of finding belonging.
