Why Noah Centineo left He-Man

The path to becoming a superhero is rarely a straight line, and for some actors, the road to legend involves a few unexpected detours. Noah Centineo, known for charming roles like those in To All the Boys I Loved Before, once stood on the precipice of history, nearly stepping into the boots of He-Man.

Centineo’s ambition was palpable. He didn’t just audition; he participated in the entire process, including screen-testing in the iconic loincloth and reviewing the production design plans for the epic world the franchise inhabited. He even signed a contract and saw the blueprint for the project, ready to step into the spotlight of an adventure that promised much more than just acting.

However, the journey hit an unexpected roadblock. As Centineo explained, the project kept shifting. Development stalled, studio decisions changed, and ultimately, his contract expired, pushing him away from the role he had so keenly sought. It turns out that transforming a beloved franchise into a compelling live-action reality is often a monumental, and frequently messy, undertaking.

The legacy of the He-Man franchise itself is a story of ambition meeting mixed results. The original live-action adaptation from 1987, starring Dolph Lundgren, struggled to connect with audiences and critics. Despite an estimated budget of $22 million, the film only managed to earn about $17.3 million worldwide, receiving an IMDb score of 5.4/10. While it ultimately failed to capture the zeitgeist, it managed to cultivate a lasting cult following.

Fast forward decades to the recent attempt to bring the legacy back to life. Nicholas Galitzine took on the mantle for the 2026 version, bringing in a massive $170 million budget and a stellar cast including Camila Mendes, Jared Leto, and Idris Elba. This latest installment generated significant buzz, grossing roughly $113.5 million globally. While critics provided a mixed response, the film successfully captured audience enthusiasm, achieving a 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite the differences in casting, Centineo has expressed nothing but admiration for the new interpretation. After seeing Galitzine’s performance, the actor called him incredible, acknowledging that he loved the direction the new He-Man was taking the story.
