The change is driven by a bold musical decision: composer Hans Zimmer is stepping away from replicating the iconic score of John Williams, opting instead to craft entirely new music for the series.
While John Williams’ work remains deeply entwined with the Wizarding World, Zimmer has stated his intention to forge a new sonic direction. The double Oscar-winner explained that while he loves the films, he seeks originality in his work. Collider reported that Zimmer sought to distance himself from Williams’ style to ensure his new score captured the unique tone of this expanded narrative.
To achieve this fresh sound, Zimmer is collaborating with a team of talented musicians, including Kara Talve and Anže Rozman of Bleeding Fingers Music. This collaborative effort will provide the auditory landscape for HBO’s adaptation of the seven-book series, scheduled to debut at Christmas in 2026.
Beyond the score, the creative team is assembling an impressive ensemble to bring the story to life. Francesca Gardiner serves as the showrunner and executive producer, while Mark Mylod is executive producer and director for multiple episodes. Their goal is a faithful adaptation that dives deeper into Rowling’s original story, giving the production ample space to explore the characters and world with greater detail than the cinematic format allowed.
This extended, long-form vision allows the series to tell a richer, more nuanced story. Gardiner and Mylod have emphasized that this expanded format gives them the freedom to explore the material thoroughly, with the ability to tell eight hours of story just for the first book alone. This approach opens up new narrative possibilities, allowing for the inclusion of beloved, yet previously unseen figures, such as Peeves, into the expanded universe.
