The realm of plush toys is making a major cinematic debut, proving that the softest collectibles can indeed command blockbuster attention. Following the massive box-office success of Barbie, Hollywood’s biggest streaming powerhouse, Amazon MGM, is eyeing a new tentpole family film based on one of the most beloved plush lines of all: Squishmallows.

This exciting development signals a growing trend where unique, beloved brands are being translated from merchandise into cinematic franchises. The studio is actively pursuing licensing rights and co-production opportunities with Jazwares, the creative force behind the Squishmallows brand, alongside a strategic partnership with Beau Flynn, known for his work on successful family entertainment.

Squishmallows themselves have achieved immense popularity through sheer charm and widespread appeal. Launched in 2017 by Kelly Toys Holdings, these round, textured plushies—available in thousands of designs ranging from animals to foods—have captivated audiences globally. Their momentum truly exploded during the COVID-19 pandemic, as social media content creators showcased their enormous collections, leading to massive engagement across platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

The brand’s digital footprint is staggering, with the official Squishmallow Instagram account boasting a million followers, and the brand accumulating over 13 billion views on TikTok throughout the years. This organic viral success positions the plushies as more than just toys; they are cultural icons ready for the big screen.

The collaboration brings together major industry players. Beyond securing licensing rights, Amazon MGM is teaming up with Beau Flynn to oversee the feature film, with Shelby Thomas managing production under the FlynnPictureCo banner. Insiders suggest this partnership was intended to create a truly global event, building upon the success of other major media crossovers.

While the exact creative details remain under wraps—it is currently unclear whether the film will be animated, live-action, or a hybrid spectacle—the involvement of Beau Flynn adds considerable weight to the project. Flynn has a proven track record in crafting compelling family narratives, having previously worked on iconic Disney features like Moana and Jungle Cruise.

Flynn’s upcoming slate is already buzzing, including work on Warner Bros.’ Hello Kitty animated feature film scheduled for 2028. With a history spanning projects like Black Adam and Baywatch, Flynn is perfectly positioned to guide the Squishmallows story into a cinematic experience that matches the brand’s immense global appeal.
