Legendary filmmaker John Carpenter is diving headfirst into the world of graphic novels with his first original work, Cathedral. This sprawling new creation promises to deliver the kind of visceral, dream-fueled horror fans expect, drawing heavy inspiration from Carpenter’s iconic style and even echoing themes found in his classic film Prince of Darkness.
The story itself is steeped in atmosphere and dread. It opens on the forgotten heart of downtown Los Angeles, centering around an abandoned cathedral fenced off and ignored by the oblivious world. But beneath the surface of this derelict structure lies a profound and ancient evil, dormant for centuries, waiting to erupt.
When a gruesome murder shatters the silence, police are called in. Lieutenant Christine Marks, alongside detectives Paul Hernandez and Steve Mayfield, must venture into the shadowed walls of the church. Their investigation quickly spirals deeper, revealing not just a crime scene, but the terrifying mystery of an evil imprisoned within the very stones of the building.
The artistic vision behind Cathedral is equally compelling. Carpenter partnered with producer and editor Sandy King and writer Sean Sobczak to craft this narrative experience. Carpenter sums up the creative drive with a powerful statement: “I saw it in a dream: a nightmare landscape deep underground filled with monsters too weird and sinister to exist in daylight. I knew instantly I had to get these things out of my head and into everyone else’s brains.”
