  • Layoffs Could Stall “Star Wars: Eclipse”?

Five years after the epic fanfare surrounding Star Wars: Eclipse was introduced, the future of the acclaimed title is facing a serious hurdle. What began as an exciting promise now sits precariously on the edge of development, embroiled in a tense struggle between corporate restructuring and creative completion.

The uncertainty has boiled over into action as developers at French studio Quantic Dream staged a strike this week. The protest centers on alleged plans to implement significant layoffs, potentially affecting around 115 employees, following the recent cancellation of another project, Spellcasters Chronicles.

For these workers, the strike is more than just a labor action; it is a desperate attempt to secure the future of Eclipse. They argue that without their team, the ambitious project simply cannot be completed on time or to the necessary standard.

One developer articulated the core concern: “We believe that, as things stand, the game literally cannot be finished if the redundancy plan is implemented as currently scheduled.”

The argument against cutting staff pivots on sustainability. Protesters contend that the industry structure often pressures developers into unsustainable crunch periods. They insisted that releasing Eclipse requires not fewer people, but more—specifically, 115 additional team members—to ensure a quality product.

“It’s far from being an act of sabotage,” another employee stated. “On the contrary, we’re trying to save Star Wars Eclipse. We could manage to release it with 115 additional people, and that wouldn’t be ‘overstaffed’: it’s what’s needed.”

This high-stakes negotiation occurred at a particularly sensitive time, as the protest coincided with a visit by a Lucasfilm Games delegation to review the progress of Eclipse.

Eclipse is slated to be a narrative-focused adventure, built around deep player choice—echoing the acclaimed storytelling found in titles like Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human. For Quantic Dream and the wider industry, ensuring that this cinematic vision is realized demands not just creative passion, but a stable, sustainable environment for its creators.
