$475M Disappointment Finally Hits Digital Streaming

When a theatrical release falls short of expectations, the true story often shifts to the digital landscape. That is exactly what has happened with Jesse Eisenberg’s animated sequel, Minions & Monsters. While the film may have delivered an underwhelming box office performance, it is finding a surprisingly vibrant new life as it dominates global streaming sales charts.

Despite its theatrical run, the digital reception has proven far more enthusiastic. Following its release, Minions & Monsters has climbed to the number one spot on major digital storefronts, including the iTunes and Apple TV Store movie sales charts. Furthermore, it has secured a strong foothold across other major platforms, landing in the top three on Amazon’s Prime Video store and cracking the top 10 on Google Play and Vudu.

Industry watchers are anticipating even greater success for the title as it continues its digital ascent. Experts expect Minions & Monsters to soon reach the top spot on Prime Video’s storefront, solidifying its status as a must-watch animated feature.

The film concluded its theatrical journey having earned $178.2 million domestically, contributing to a worldwide total of $475.8 million. While this figure might seem modest in isolation, the real story lies in the franchise’s historical context. Minions & Monsters stands as the lowest-grossing entry in the Despicable Me and Minions saga to date.

Even its opening numbers were subdued; the film debuted with a $37 million gross from 4,243 theaters, marking the smallest theatrical debut across the entire series compared to prior installments. This contrasts sharply with the history of the franchise, where other sequels and spin-offs have routinely achieved staggering global totals.

For reference, nearly every subsequent film in the saga has reached or surpassed the $1 billion mark worldwide: Despicable Me (2010) brought in $544.1 million; Minions (2015) hit $1.15 billion; and Despicable Me 3 (2017) netted $1.03 billion worldwide.

Despite the lower theatrical haul, the film remains financially viable for Universal Pictures, largely thanks to the franchise’s consistently modest production budgets. The international performance proved particularly strong, with its global gross of $297.6 million accounting for 62.5% of the total worldwide revenue, reflecting the franchise’s established pattern of success overseas.

Today, fans can easily access Minions & Monsters, available to rent or buy across major digital platforms like iTunes, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, and Vudu, ensuring that this animated adventure continues its journey far beyond the cinema screen.
