Big Bang Theory Star Returns for a Giant Role
The world of television often thrives on delightful deviations, and the latest installment of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe proves that when you throw some science fiction characters into an alternate reality, the results can be delightfully ridiculous. The newest episode brings back another original character, taking a comedic twist on the established universe, especially with the return of Melissa Rauch as Bernadette Rostenkowski.
But this time, the absurdity goes scaling. Smoke and mirrors were involved in bringing Bernadette to life as an 80-foot monster capable of wreaking havoc across Pasadena. This giant incarnation pays homage to some of the running jokes from the original series, particularly concerning character height.
Melissa Rauch, who portrayed Bernadette in the previous episodes, embraced the physical joke by playing a version of her character that is dramatically taller than the norm. She revealed that while she played an alternate version of her Big Bang Theory character, her character’s height was a running gag in the original show, making the decision to play a towering, demonic figure particularly fitting for the narrative.
When asked about the massive scale of her role, Rauch shared a moment of pure theatrical glee. She recalled that while her character’s goal height had always been modest, she found the challenge of playing an 80-foot monster thrilling. “When they told me it was going to be an 80-foot-tall Bernadette… my goal height has always been five feet,” Rauch explained during an interview. “So to get 75 extra feet to play with was thrilling.”
The production team also offered a fascinating glimpse into the process of creating this epic scene. To achieve the effect of destruction, they didn’t rely solely on digital effects; they brought miniature set pieces to life. Rauch revealed that for filming the sequence where her character wrecks Pasadena, the crew utilized miniature city models and even a Barbie doll, allowing her to interact with tiny versions of the cast and buildings. “To pick up a tiny building was the greatest rush,” she shared, noting how cool it was to interact with these miniature worlds.
Beyond the visual spectacle, Rauch discussed finding the vocal quality for Bernadette, seven years after the original series concluded. She emphasized the importance of voice in character development. “I’m so grateful for Bernadette’s voice because voice has always been my way into characters,” she noted. Finding the high-pitched register felt like slipping into a familiar, comfortable role, allowing her to immediately connect with the persona she was embodying.
The episode continues this blend of heart and humor, showcasing how these beloved characters can evolve in new and unexpected ways while delivering some truly spectacular television. New episodes of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe stream on HBO Max every Thursday.
