Female Sniper Film Teaser No Paradise if You Are Killed

Time for a look at the intense cinematic work premiering at this year’s Venice Film Festival, kicking off in early September. At the heart of the festival lineup is No Paradise if You Are Killed by a Woman, a deeply moving film from acclaimed Norwegian-Kurdish filmmaker Halkawt Mustafa, originally born in Iraq.

The story plunges viewers into the harrowing reality of war, following Kurdish sniper Vyan, who has suppressed her emotions to survive brutal conflict against ISIS. Her life is defined by the relentless violence she endures, but her peace shatters when she discovers that her sister, thought lost during the 2014 attack, may still be alive in Mosul.

This discovery forces Vyan to abandon her stoicism and return to the ravaged city, confronting the immense trauma she has long tried to avoid. The film is an intensely unsettling exploration of survival, forcing the protagonist to face the violence she endured and the shadows of the person war has forged.

The narrative is anchored by a compelling ensemble cast, featuring Avan Jamal as Vyan and Thorbjørn Harr as Anders, supported by the performances of Kanar Sarchl and Kader Jalal.

More than just a story of war, the film delves into profound themes of female resilience and the cost of humanity. Director Mustafa drew inspiration from real-life women directors and the incredible courage of human rights activist Nadia Murad, who was abducted by ISIS in Iraq. The film powerfully illuminates the harrowing brutality of contemporary warfare while celebrating the indomitable spirit of those who survive it.
